Newsletter–Bulletin d’information – Juillet/July 2013

J’ai aussi lu l’ « Atlas of the Acadian Settlement of the Beaubassin 1660 to 1755, Tintamarre and Le Lac, par Paul Surette, Publier par le Tantramar Heritage Trust Inc, 29 B Queen’s Road, Sackville, N.B., E4L 4G4, ISBN 0-9683042-4-9, Droit d’auteur 2005, Pages : 202 »

Exposition d’art - L’ESPRIT DE GRAND PRÉ:

( English Text )

There were six (6) updates of the database since the 12th of May 2013. Approximately, 661 individual records have been added, and another 676 existing records were modified.

In addition I added many headstone, obituaries, pictures and documents associated to individuals in the database.
On the indexing front, I indexed a few more pages of the Bourgeois’ included in the “Melanson – Melançon, The genealogy of an Acadian and Canjun Family” book. I also indexed this year’s batch of BMS documents released by the Nova Scotia Archives and I started indexing the Marriage and Death documents for 1926-1996 included in the Drouin collection.  This is going to be another long project as there are about 1850 documents related to the Bourgeois’ in this collection. I also did some work on entries from Massachusetts, Louisiana and New-Brunswick.

I would like to thank Nolan Bourgeois (Obituaries), Diane Bourgeois Perkins (Family gathering), Patrick Bourgeois & Diane Bastien (Family gathering & genealogy), Richard Bourgeois and Harvey Chabot (Family gathering), Lyne Coté (Genealogy – Magdelene-Islands), Georgette Bourgeois (Art exposition), Elizabeth Bourgeois (Genealogy),   Charles E. Bourgeois, Frank Catalli, Leah Larkin, Mona Winberley, Leo Bourgeois, Seth Bourgeois, Renée Tétreault and Francis Leblanc for their contributions and their comments. As always, they are very much appreciated.

Activity on the site:

There are presently 552 registered users to the site. This is an increase of 23 users since the 12th of May.

Reminder:

There is still time to get out your camera and photograph your local Bourgeois family headstones before the return of fall and the inevitable onslaught of rain and snow that will follow.  If you have time I would appreciate any pictures you would be willing to share.  Please verify the site to ensure that the cemetery you are thinking of photographing hasn’t already been photographed.

Books:

I am presently reading “Théotiste Bourgeois, Le drame de Beaubassin, Roman Historique – Tome 1, by Maxime Arseneau, published by Les Éditions de la Francophonie, 55 rue des Cascades, Lévis (Québec), e-mail : ediphonie@bellnet.ca, ISBN 978-2-89627-301-0, Copyright 2012, Pages : 475”
This book is part one of a two part series, that as far as I can tell is only available in French which is ashamed given that this historical novel provide a really good account of the years leading up to and including the great upheaval and the 7 year war.  Théotiste Bourgeois and the other people included the story are historically accurate although romanced as any historical novel would need to do to create a story.  The characters become our eye and ears and allow us, the reader, to get a sense of what it must have been like to live in a time and place with so much turmoil.   We see real people making tough decisions based on limited choices and the possibility of very few positive outcomes.  We get a sense of family and extended family and the courage it took to house, feed and protect it. The French and English are both viewed as friend and foe by these people caught between two warring empires.

Although I haven’t finished the book yet, I would recommend it to everyone.  It is historically accurate and well balanced, and bring to life the story of a branch the Bourgeois family.

I also read the “Atlas of the Acadian Settlement of the Beaubassin 1660 to 1755, Tintamarre and Le Lac, by Paul Surette, published the Tantramar Heritage Trust Inc, 29B Queen’s Road, Sackville, N.B., E4L 4G4, ISBN 0-9683042-4-9, Copyright 2005, Pages : 202”

This book is available in both French and English and although difficult to find it is still available.  This book is not for everybody. Designed as an Atlas, it is reference tool jam-packed with information about the settlement of the Beaubassin area.   In contains three major sections, the first is an historical timeline of the area covering the period from 1667 to 1755 and the two other sections  cover Tintamarre and Le Lac respectively.  Each of the Atlas sections are broken down into smaller section covering each of the settlements of the area. The settlement are then described by Toponymy (name origin), Geography, History and Resettlement (were the inhabitants ended up after the deportation).

This book is actually a great to have while reading the book about Théotiste Bourgeois as it was used as a source of the geographic and historical information used in the writing of Théotiste Bourgeois.  This book is really a great reference document but if you’re not into dry historical and geographical facts this book will not be for you.

Family Reunions:

It’s summer and families have met or are preparing to meet.  Here are few highlights.

From Richard Bourgeois: Remember the Alberta Bourgeois’ are having their 5 year reunion from the 3rd to the 5th of Aug, 2013.  The Bourgeois/ Rondeau reunion to be held in Jean Cote, Alberta. Anyone wish to get information can go to their Facebook page “The Bourgeois/ Rondeau reunion”.

From Patrice Bourgeois: Last Saturday was held a big party to celebrate the progeny of Elphege and Agatha (of the Magdalene Islands). The organizers did a great job, with songs recalling our parties of old, documents on our family history, many of which came from your site (Histoire-de-Bourgeois), a list of the descendants of the children born in the Saguenay region (including my late father Armand). And this cake!  The family is already talking about next year’s party.

From Diane Bourgeois Perkins: The Mississippi Bourgeois’ will be holding their Bourgeois Reunion on Nov. 9th 2013 at McLeod Park, more details to come.

If you have any information about family gatherings please let me know.

Links:

Radio Canada the French arms of the Canadian Broadcasting Network has recently put up a web site (see http://acadiens.radio-canada.ca/) (French only) centered on a two part special about the Acadians of Québec.  This is a very good site that provided access to streamed version of the two 1 hour specials, a detailed timeline, and a background on the origins of the Acadian families, as well as, biographies of important family members.

Lyne Côté has informed me that Christian Dubé’s site (http://www.gen-iles-de-la-madeleine.com/) which included a very good genealogical database of the Magdalene-Islands is no longer available.  Lyne has tried to contact Christian to find out what has happened to the site and is awaiting a response. In the interim I tried using www.archive.org Waybackmachine to see if the site had been archived and I found that although the static text pages are still accessible, all the pictures and the database are not.

“La France des Acadiens”:

In my last newsletter I told you about two Acadian tours of France I had discovered.  Well Louise and I decided to book the May tour with “La Société du Monument Lefebvre” and we were not disappointed.
France des Acadiens
The two week tour for French speakers only was excellent.  The first part of the tour covered the origins of the Acadian people and included locations where the first settler lived prior to leaving for Acadia, as well as, their ports of departure

The second part covered the history and locations of the Acadian deportation to France, including those deported to England and repatriate to France after 1763 treaty.   This part of the tour would be of special interest to those living in Louisiana as this is really part of their heritage because the vast majority of the Louisiana Acadian were originally part of this group.

The last part of the tour we visited some major tourist site including Mont St-Michel, Caen, D-day beaches and Paris.

The guides were excellent and provided a great atmosphere and environment for all of the participants, and showed an in-depth knowledge of Acadian history and culture.   As part of the tour we got to meet with several French Acadian association’s and talk to people that try to keep Acadian history alive in France.  I learned a lot about Acadian culture in France and how important it is to those living in France 250 years after the deportation.  The tour group was composed of people with a passion for their Acadian heritage and a joviality for which Acadians are known.  I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in the Acadian origins or the deportation period in France.

English speakers might be interest in a similar tour organized by Novacadie Tours.  It is a bilingual tour that follows essentially the same itinerary as the one offered by Les Monuments Lefebvre, which will takes place in September, 2013.  For more information on this tour see http://novacadie.ca/2013-tour-to-france.

Both of these organizations offer other tour which you can be discover on their respective sites.  I would however like to highlight the “La Louisiane des cousins Cajuns” trip, organized for French speaker by Les Monuments Lefebvre that will tour Louisiana in October, 2013.

You might also be interested in a bilingual tour which will be offered by Les Monument Lefebvre in conjunction with partners in France and Louisiana that is being planned around the 2014 World Acadian Congress. This tour will last for two weeks and will visit major Acadian sites in Nova Scotia and New-Brunswick and will include CMA2014 activities.
Art Exhibition - L’ESPRIT DE GRAND PRÉ:

Our cousin, Georgette Bourgeois, is presently having a show of her art at the “Galerie d’art Bouctouche”, 5 Irving Blvd, Bouctouche, N.-B., E4S 3J3.  The showing started on the 31st of July and will end on the 19th of August.  The showing is accompanied by the documentary “L’Esprit de Grand-Pré”.  If you are in the area don’t miss it.

The Coming Months:

No major plans for the coming months. We are heading to New-Brunswick for a couple of weeks to take in some of the Acadian activities and festival surrounding the August 15th celebrations.
