Newsletter – Bulletin d’information – Septembre/September 2010

LOUISIANE-ACADIE, INC. ANNONCE LE
“GRAND RÉVEIL ACADIEN / GREAT ACADIAN AWAKENING”

( English Text )

Good day to you all.

Reminder - newsletter:

The newsletters are now available online on the Histoire-de-Bourgeois discussion forum (Drop Down Menu > Other > Discussion Forum (E/F) > Blog à Marc - Marc's Blog) or http://marcadm.websitetoolbox.com/ , on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=120627851304544) and on Blogger (see http://www.histoire-de-bourgeois.blogspot.com/).

Status update:

There were five database updates since the 22nd of August. Approximately 600 individual records have been added and more than 800 existing records were modified. Most of the work was focused on the Bourgeois’ of New Brunswick and Lousiana. I also worked on descendants of Augustave (Gustave) Bourgeois et Josephine Vicknair, de St-James-Parish, LA, US.

With the help of Charles E. Bourgeois, I added two (2) new Louisiana cemeteries and approximately 50 tombstones to the database. The tombstones have been linked to corresponding families and individuals.

I also added more family photos, which have been linked to the families and persons concerned.

I would like to thank Jack K. Coffee (Ancestors of Marguerite Lucy Bourgeois Laurent (1910-2002)), Randy Bourgeois (All things Bourgeois), Charles E. Bourgeois (photos de Cemetery and tombstone photos), Kevin Bourgeois (Photos) and Francine Jodoin (Photos) for their contributions and comments.

Activity on the site:

There are presently 186 registered users of the site.

Books:

I didn’t have time to read this month because I had too many genealogical projects underway.

Useful Links:

While doing research over the course of the last month I discovered three websites containing information about the Bourgeois family.

The first site, “Notre Histoire Familiale” ( see http://genealogie.familleboucher.ca/tng/index.php ), is actually a rediscovery. I had previously collaborated with its creator, Claude Boucher, but had forgotten about the site. This site is dedicated to the Boucher family but contains over 600 records related to members of Bourgeois family in Québec, New Brunswick and Acadia. This site was created with the same software as the Histoire-de-Bourgeois site and therefore, has a familiar interface.

The second site, "Ancestors of Marguerite Bourgeois Laurent (1910-2002) Lucy" ( see http://www.thecoffeycousins.org/Bourgeois/Jacques%20Bourgeois%20and%20Jeanne%20Trahan/index.htm ) is an English only site. The site created by Jack Coffee is in a standard HTML format without a search engine, it must be navigated via the branches of the family tree or via the use the name index to locate records you are looking for. Dedicated to the ancestry of Margaret Lucy Bourgeois, the site contains over 1800 records of Louisiana Bourgeois’. The site was last updated in 2007, and some records may be inaccurate. The author reads his email and will do what he can to help you in your research and answers to any questions you may have.

The third and last sites « All Things Bourgeois » ( see https://sites.google.com/site/allthingsbourgeois/home/family-tree ) is in english only site. This personal site establishes the ancestry of its creator Randall Joseph Bourgeois. The site is simple and is a good example on how we can document our personal ancestry.

GRA2011 :

Following in the footsteps of the WMA 2009 Louisiana starts “le Grand Réveil Acadien 2011”. Perhaps this can be another occasion for the Bourgeois family to meet.

Excerpt from the ARG 2011press release:

LOUISIANE-ACADIE, INC. ANNOUNCES THE
“GRAND RÉVEIL ACADIEN / GREAT ACADIAN AWAKENING”
Lafayette, Louisiana. January 29, 2010 - Louisiane-Acadie Inc., aiming to fulfill the mission to mobilize all Acadians to participate in the continued expression of their native French language and culture, announces "Grand Réveil Acadien / Great Acadian Awakening”, a one week gathering of Acadians from around the world, to be held in Louisiana in October 2011.

From September 30 to October 9, 2011, the entire Acadiana Region will open its doors to welcome family and friends, who want to celebrate and assist in helping preserve the Acadian/Cajun culture, customs, traditions and history of the first North American settlers, the Acadians. The "Grand Réveil Acadien / Great Acadian Awakening” will be held the week before the “Festival Acadiens et Créoles” and will close with a huge celebration of renewal on the last day of the Festival.

If you would like more information on this event, please contact Ray Trahan at (337) 288 – 2681 or visit www.gra2011.org and www.louisiane-acadie.com.

One family, two countries, three flags

Have you noticed the addition of the three flags in the footer of the site? Did you know that there are three Acadian flags?

The third flag, the one on the right side of the screen, was created by Bill Cork (see: http://wquercus.com/acadie/flag.htm) to recognize the Acadians to New England. This unofficial flag was presented to the WMA 2004 for consideration. Still not official, it is used by several people to represent the Acadians from New England.

I created the motto "One family, two countries, three flags" to honour the Bourgeois family and recognize its dispersion throughout North America and the various cultural regional identities to which the family is associated.

Sources and citations:

You probably know that the sources and citations associated with the genealogical data on the site indicate the source of a data as well as its reliability. In many cases citations contain an HTML links to the original source document from which the data was extracted.

    1. [S633] Le Fonds - Drouin - Collection, Ontario French Catholic Church Records, 1747-1967 , Basilique Notre Dame - Ottawa, Yr: 1901, P: 291, B326 (Fiabilité: 3).

All users need to do is copy the link into the web browser address box and hit the carriage return to access the original document. It should be noted that these addresses may be references to fee based sites.

Commentary

How do you eat a whale? The answer, of course, is one bite at a time.

When I started the Histoire-de-Bourgeois project, I thought I was attacking a problem the size of an elephant, I now realize that I underestimated the extent of the challenge I had given myself. My elephant has become a blue whale the largest living mammal on earth.

The efforts required to document the family today are much more difficult and less productive overall. The beast tender meat has been devoured, and I am now cutting into the tougher muscle. Formal documentation (i.e., Church and Governments registers) for the period after 1900 are not available or difficult to find. I now rely more heavily on family genealogies and census, death notice, cemetery and tombstone data, which is less substantive and more difficult to analyse, resulting in an higher uncertainty of the results of the analysis and possibly errors. I have thus chosen not to link data where doubt reigned. Users will therefore, find many more leaves (i.e., individual) and branches (i.e., family) on the site not directly linked to the Bourgeois family tree than would have preciously been the case.

I continue my research in the certainty that one day I will find the missing links or that some good Samaritans visiting the site will give me information that will lead to the links.

Next Month:

In the next month, I will be migrating my home work environment to a new PC which should take approximately a week with testing. I also want to attend to the "first authors in genealogy and history exhibition" to be held in Montreal October 3 (see http://www.sgcf.com/documents/salon_des_auteurs_2010.pdf ) and finally I'll continue to eat my whale one bite at a time starting with the New Brunswick Vital Statistics from Government Records (RS141) for the period of 1905 to 1920.
